Grading Kennedy halves

At what grade would it be worth including a '64 Kennedy-half into my numismatics, rather than tossing into my junk 90% silver bag?

Are uncs the only Kennedy halves worth holding for numismatic value?

I have some real nice '64 Kennedys but they are circulated. A few are XF+, maybe even AU... and 5 or 6 are XF with nice tonning. Should i just toss them all in my 90% bag?

Thanks!!

A reasonable approach to an answer may be investigating the bid and ask prices for 64 Kennedys. How often do you see raw 64 Kennedys offered in MS grades? What are the prices if they are even quoted? :thinkey:

It might depend on how long you plan on holding them.

Au after the next great melt might have some extra value.

Uncirculated '64 Kennedy halves were hoarded in such vast numbers that I, personally, would not place a numismatic premium on any speciman that didn't look to be at least MS-64. And, even then, for a raw coin the premium would be minimal. On the other hand, a gem uncirculated MS-65+ piece slabbed by a top-tier company such as PCGS will sell on Ebay at a decent premium above spot.

gopher took the words right out of my keyboard. I put away so many of them myself. I also kept any I happened to get in change, even those 40% ones. But I imagine most are still uncirculated, or if so, with very little wear. We used to take them to Europe to leave as tips; they were so well known and well received. I imagine many are sitting in drawers all over the world.
My wife was working in a bank at the time, so I could have her buy as many rolls each week as I could afford. Even a couple years later someone found a stash of Kennedy 64 rolls in the vault and they were divided among those employees who wanted to or more correctly had the money to buy them. So I added even more. I doubt any of us will live long enough to see much value, other than the silver content of course.

I love a big bag of 90%.

I have my circulated stuff that isn't in plastic rolls, like washingtons and roosevelts in burlap bags that held coffee; it makes me feel like a pirate to hold them.... weird I know
